Participants worked from a person of their choice while considering likeness, character and the expressive possibilities of painted portraiture.

The sessions began with drawing exercises and developed towards oil painting. Along the way, the course introduced facial proportions, the positioning of features, hair, light and shade, and the details that help a portrait feel individual.

References to modern and contemporary portrait painting provided points of comparison and inspiration. The programme concluded with a finished oil painting for each participant to take home.

About the course

The teaching structure made space for different levels of experience. Beginners could build confidence with fundamental exercises, while returning painters could use the guided format to refine observation, composition and colour decisions.

Participants were invited to bring reference images of the person they wished to paint. The course supplied the required working materials.

About the artist
