Editorial conduct
A respectful resource for shared cultural history
Our approach
The Tetley Story is intended to be a welcoming, careful and accessible record of exhibitions, artists and programmes.
This independent resource recognises that cultural histories include many perspectives and experiences. We aim to describe them with care, avoid language that excludes or diminishes people, and make room for correction when a page can be improved.
We do not accept discriminatory, threatening or abusive contributions to the resource. Material submitted for consideration may be declined or removed when it targets people or communities, misrepresents evidence, or prevents constructive discussion.
Respect people and communities
Use names, identities and descriptions thoughtfully. Do not make assumptions about how someone identifies or expect personal information that is not relevant to the historical record.
Keep language precise
Describe documented events and artistic practices clearly. Avoid sensational wording, stereotypes and generalisations, particularly when discussing identity, disability, belief or lived experience.
Separate record from interpretation
Editorial context should not be presented as an official statement or as certainty where the available record is incomplete. Source material is paraphrased rather than reproduced as extended quotation.
Raise concerns constructively
Corrections and concerns are most useful when they identify the page, explain the issue and provide supporting context. We review these requests in good faith.
A safer record
There is no place for abuse here
Comments, submissions or correspondence containing harassment, hate speech, threats or targeted abuse will not be published. Where a contribution raises a genuine editorial issue, we will focus on the detail and respond in a measured way.
To report a concern about this page or another entry, email info@thetetleystory.en-html.org. Please include the page URL and a concise explanation.
Questions
Applying the policy
Does this policy apply to every page?
Yes. It guides the resource’s editorial writing, corrections and any material considered for publication.
Can historical language ever be discussed?
Historical terms may be relevant to understanding a record, but they should be contextualised and not used casually or to reproduce harmful abuse.
What happens when a page contains an error?
We assess the concern, compare it with available documentation and revise the page when a correction is supported.
Can I request a correction anonymously?
You may send a request without identifying yourself. Providing reliable supporting information helps us assess it.
Does The Tetley Story represent an institution?
No. This is an independent informational resource and does not speak for the gallery, its staff, artists or any other organisation.
