TAAP 2023–24

The Tetley’s Associate Artists Programme supported three developing artists through mentoring, external support and time to deepen their practices.

The programme

Space to develop, question and make

For 2023–24, the Associate Artists Programme supported Emily Binks, Lisa-Marie Dickinson and Beatrice Lee Knowles.

The programme was designed around tailored mentoring and opportunities for exchange. Its emphasis on participation and education connected each artist’s developing practice with wider audiences in Leeds and Yorkshire.

The following records summarise the artists’ practices and the contexts in which they were working during the programme year.

Three distinct approaches

From sculptural environments and asemic writing to sensory play, the artists brought different materials and questions to the programme.

Emily Binks

Emily Binks is an artist, creative practitioner and educator whose sculptural installations examine ideas of home. Her mixed-media works bring together discarded domestic furniture, neon and materials associated with temporary shelter and construction.

Her practice has included A Room, presented during Leeds Light Night, and Home Is. In 2023, she received support from the Henry Moore Foundation Artist Award.

Lisa-Marie Dickinson

Lisa-Marie Dickinson works across drawing, sculpture and photography. Their practice explores the shifting importance of language through written, spoken and gestural forms.

A particular interest in asemic writing examines marks that resemble language without carrying fixed verbal meaning. Lines can become drawings, while drawings can suggest forms of communication beyond the alphabet.

Recent projects included Definitions of Drawing and Make, developed following a residency with Freelands Foundation.

Beatrice Lee Knowles

Beatrice Lee Knowles is an artist, workshop facilitator and play activator whose work has a strong sensory focus. She designs resources that encourage open-ended exploration and creative play.

Her outreach practice includes sculpture, mark-making and textile workshops. Sessions focus on process, material possibilities and the ways people make, rather than on a single finished result.

Projects have included den building, school residencies, family activities and creative programmes with community partners.

resource context

Artist development as shared practice

TAAP placed individual artistic development alongside dialogue, learning and public engagement. The programme recognised that artists’ practices grow through sustained attention, practical support and opportunities to test ideas with others.
