The project

A film shaped by place

On Clogger Lane is an experimental documentary by Andrew Black. The film travels through the Washburn Valley between Otley and Harrogate, examining how land carries histories of work, ownership, infrastructure and protest.

Its route brings together traces of prehistoric carving, reservoirs, a satellite surveillance site and accounts of communities who have lived and worked across the valley. The film considers how public and private histories overlap within a shared landscape.

Conversations with local people and researchers form part of the film’s wider investigation. An improvisational score accompanies this movement between memory, observation and the material evidence of place.

Research and presentation

The film was shown alongside archival material relating to largely women-led peace groups connected with Menwith Hill. Together, the moving image and research display set personal testimony, political action and regional history within the same exhibition context.
